Scar Massage Therapy - Promoting Healing, Flexibility & Confidence

Scars are a natural part of the body’s healing process, but they can sometimes become tight, raised, painful, or emotionally distressing.  They can also affect posture, range of motion and lymphatic flow.  Even though they may appear visibly as healed, the fascia underneath will still need support.  Scar massage is a gentle, hands-on technique that helps improve the appearance, flexibility, and function of scar tissue and the surrounding fascia.

What Is Scar Massage?

Scar massage is a therapeutic technique that involves applying tailored, gentle pressure and movement to the skin and underlying tissues/fascia where a scar has formed.  A range of strokes are used including circular, linear and cross-friction movements that encourages healthy remodelling of the scar.

Whether from surgery, injury or burns, massage can support your scar healing by:

  • Softening tight or raised scar tissue

  • Improving blood flow and lymphatic drainage

  • Reducing pain, itching, or sensitivity

  • Restoring normal movement in the surrounding tissue

  • Improving the cosmetic appearance of the scar

Which Scars benefit from rehabilitation?

  • C-section scars (helping the body to reduce the "pouch" above the scar line)

  • Surgical scars

  • Trauma-related scars

  • Burn scars

  • Dermatological scars

When Can You Start Scar Massage?

Scar massage is typically recommended once the wound is fully closed and healed — usually around 4 weeks post-injury or surgery, depending on individual healing.  This is when silicone tape can also be used which is a fantastic tool in scar healing.

However, treatments such as photobiomodulation, 6-D taping (around the region of but not over the scar) can be used earlier than this.  It is usual for scar massage to be included as part of an MLD appointment.  A full scar assessment is carried out at your appointment which includes breathing and range of motion assessment.  Even old scars can benefit from scar massage and this is something seen many times in clinic.

I also teach you ways to support your own scar at home between appointments!

If you'd like to book in for Scar Massage, I recommend booking an MLD appointment (New Client option if you've not been to me before), so that I can incorporate a range of techniques to support you.
